The Kalighat Temple is dedicated to the mother Goddess Kaali, one of the oldest Adi Shakti Peeths. It is the amongst the most powerful Shakti Peetha in the world. It is located in Kolkata city, in eastern India. This ancient temple reverberates with extraordinary stories of tantriks and their devotion to the goddess.

According to the Kalika Purana, it is amongst the four most powerful Shakti Pethas and it originated from the limbs of the Corpse of Mata Sati. It is therefore called as the Adi Shakti Peetha.

Kalika’s Adi Rup is preserved within the sanctum sanctorum , which is bathed once a year on the auspicious day of Snanjatra. A highly secretive ritual takes place within the inner sanctum behind sealed doors, attended by only four members of the Haldar family. With great care, the original, svayambhu form of Kalika is removed from its lockbox by the shebaits who remain blindfolded throughout the entire proceeding; this idol is too powerful for gaze of mortal eyes.

Legend : The origin of worship 'Shakti' at the site is associated with the legend of Sati, who was the wife of the ascetic god Shiva and daughter of the Puranic god-king Daksha. Daksha was unhappy with his daughter's choice of husband, and when he performed a grand Vedic sacrifice for all the deities, he did not invite Shiva or Sati. In a rage, Sati threw herself onto the fire, knowing that this would make the sacrifice impure. Because she was the all-powerful mother goddess, Sati left her body in that moment to be reborn as the goddess Parvati. Meanwhile, Shiva was stricken with grief and rage at the loss of His wife. He put Sati's body over his shoulder and began his tandava (dance of cosmic destruction) throughout the heavens, and vowed not to stop until the body was completely rotted away. The other Gods, afraid of their annihilation, implored Vishnu to pacify Shiva. Thus, wherever Shiva wandered while dancing, Vishnu followed. He sent his discus Sudarshana to destroy the corpse of Sati. Pieces of Her body fell until Shiva was left without a body to carry. These places are called Shakti peethas and are dedicated to various powerful goddesses. Kalighat represents the site where the toes of the right foot of Sati fell.

Puja services offered at Kalighat temple:

  1. Waking up Kaali: At 4:00 am, She is gently awoken and the idol is cleaned and decorated with garlands of red hibiscus flowers before the temple doors are opened to the public. Special prayers would be done in your name during this time.
  2. Food offering to Kaali: The doors to the garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) are closed at 2 PM, and the Goddess is offered food in private. Public is not allowed inside during this time. Special food would be offered in your name, while I would remain inside the sanctum sanctorum.
  3. Aarti offering: Time to commune with Kalika. Aarti and Prasada to the Goddess would be offered in your name.
  4. Shayan (preparing Kaali for bed): At 11 PM the Goddess is lovingly dressed and prepared for bed. The sanctum sanctorum is officially closed after this. Special offerings would be made in your name during this time.

After the successful completion of the puja, the head priest of the temple would bless for fulfillment of your puja and Sankalpa and will give a highly energized pure silver Kaali locket with a Kaali yantra attached to it. It would contain highly powerful energised items from Kalighat. This would act as a powerful shield and is potent enough to fulfill all material and spiritual desires.

The temple priests will perform Puja as per vedic rituals based on birth details. Please mention your birth details (name, date, time, and place of birth), & Sankalp (your wish) at checkout. This is an individual Puja (you may book puja only on your name or include your near/dear ones in your puja).

  You add a ritual to your shopping cart, after reading the benefits and based on your concerns.

  At the time of booking your ritual(s), you are asked to provide your "Name, birth details, Sankalpa and instructions" on the shopping cart page. You can also mention your Gotra, Nakshatra and Rashi details there (if you know).

  Immediately after the receipt of your order, we start identifying the most auspicious date and time to perform the ritual.

  An email is sent to you within 12 hours of order confirmation, which would comprise:
  1. Date on which your puja would be performed.
  2. Complete timings and duration of your ritual.
  3. Sankalpa time: When you can join us and pray for the fulfillment of your wish.
  4. Zoom meeting details for taking the Sankalpa.
  5. Mantra and meditation instructions to follow at your end.
  6. Dietary precautions on the day of your puja.
  7. List of some easy to get items, to take the Sankalpa.

  You can also email us your photo, at contact@pujayagna.com, to keep during the performance of your puja (optional).

  On the scheduled day and time, you can join over Zoom to take your Sankalpa (optional). You will be guided during the call to take the Sankalpa.

  Immediately after the successful completion of your ritual, an email is sent with photos/videos of the ritual.

  In case of rituals lasting over several days, you will receive daily updates over email, WhatsApp or Viber.
