Shiva Tandava Stotram is an important prayer dedicated to God Shiva. Ravana, the demon king is believed to have composed the Stotra. The hymn glorifies Shiva as the Supreme Brahman.
Ravana was arrogant with his powers. So to impress Shiva, He once attempted to lift the Kailash Mountain. Shiva to quell the arrogance of Ravana simply placed his toe on the mountain. Ravana’s fingers were crushed in the attempt and he could not remove it from under the Holy Mountain.
To remove his fingers and escape from the pain and impending death, Ravana sang the Shiva Tandava Stotram and he was spared and blessed with chandrahas (moon sword by Shiva) considered one of the most powerful and invincible weapon.
Both the ninth and tenth quatrains of this hymn conclude with lists of Shiva's epithets as destroyer, even the destroyer of death itself.
